Summary


SUMMARY

This is a full-time non-exempt position primarily responsible for providing support to inmates of Westmoreland County Prison who have identified behavioral health needs and may also be dually diagnosed (intellectually disabled or have drug and alcohol disorder).  The Treatment Specialist will provide support to inmates of the Westmoreland County Prison (WCP) by working collaboratively with WCSI Behavioral Health Therapist/ Supervisor and other prison stakeholders including but not limited to all prison staff and contracted treatment providers.  Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Therapist/Supervisor will be responsible for developing, organizing and leading psychoeducational groups.  Groups material will focus on assisting inmates with recognizing symptoms of diagnosis, developing coping skills, medication management, and other identified skills in preparation for release.  The Treatment Specialist will also be responsible for working with applicable WCSI employees in preparing inmates for seam-less entry back into community.

 

Primary work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30PM with ½ hour unpaid lunch (37.5 hrs/week), unless otherwise agreed upon.

 

Employee is expected to adhere to WCSI, County, State and Federal Guidelines, regulations, policies, and laws which govern the business and service of WCSI.  

 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to inmates who suffer from persistent and severe behavioral health disorders
  • Ability to follow and develop inmate treatment plans
  • Lead psycho-education groups while maintaining safe therapeutic environment
  • Document interventions, observations, and outcomes of individual participation in groups
  • Evaluate inmate behavior to determine success/failure of treatment program
  • Interact with individuals who might be resistant, angry, or manipulative
  • Possess solid communication skills and work well under stress
  • Act professionally and maintain interpersonal boundaries
  • Coordinate seam-less entry back into community
  • Knowledge of the operations and policies of the WCP


Therapeutic Activities:

The Treatment Specialist will share in the responsibility of developing and dispensing psychoeducational material to groups and individual inmates.  Utilize screening and or self-reporting tools to evaluate and direct therapeutic interventions.

Crisis Intervention Activities:

Evaluates inmates and works within the corrections settings to arrange for urgent psychiatric care, if needed.  Ensures that all alternatives to hospitalization have been explored.
Documentation:

Maintain inmate records by upholding best practice standards developed for treatment program.  Prepare and document all activities associated with each inmate. Updates all forms associated with program as needed.   Maintain professional standards in completing work in preparation for ongoing supervisor and County reviews.

Professional/Technical Responsibilities:

Extensive knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques related to service provided. Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationship with inmates, associates and agency personnel. Knowledge of community resources and ability to facilitate coordination activities to prepare inmates for seamless re-entry into community.  Ability to prepare clear, concise reports and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.





Supervisor Responsibility


This position has no supervisory responsibility. The Treatment Specialist reports directly to the BH Licensed Therapist/Supervisor and may also take direction from the BH Program Manager, BH Director and/or the Chief Executive Officer.


Qualifications


:

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree Human Service/Social Science and two years’ experience in direct contact with Behavioral Health clients in a therapeutic or corrections setting is preferred.     

Language Skills:
Strong Interpersonal skills, effective oral and written communication skills.

Certificates, Registrations, Licenses:

Valid PA Driver’s License, Proof of Valid Auto Insurance, Act 34 (Criminal Record), and Act 33 (Child Abuse) and FBI Clearance. There will be monthly screenings of PA Medicheck List, LEIE and SAM.  Due to the nature of this position the Treatment Specialist will be expected to meet all ongoing clearances and training requirements of the Westmoreland County Prison. 

 Physical/Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to operate a motor vehicle, sit, stand, walk, bend and regularly lift objects of up to 30 pounds. The employee may need to drive a vehicle, utilize a cell phone, GPS, computer, fax, copier and other essential office equipment to carry out daily work. Must be able to perform CPR/First Aid if needed. Substantial problem solving is needed to respond to urgent or emergency situations.

Other Requirements of this Position:

Position will be required to maintain and evaluate data to measure quality of program effectiveness.  The employee will be required to adhere to the policies/procedures of Westmoreland County Prison.

Work Environment:

The primary work environment will be in a correctional (prison) setting, within the structure of the Westmoreland County Prison.  While performing their job duties and responsibilities, the employee will be regularly exposed to the correctional environment and exposed to the prison inmate population, which is the population that will be receiving behavioral health support.
